The Horseman: Leading It Round
Oh, look at that! A horse and a cart and a big hat. It’s a very big horse. “Alogo,” says Maria. (That’s Greek for horse.)
The man has a big hat and a moustache. He hasn’t got a Mummy—that’s sad. But he does have a big hat, a moustache and a horse. According to Margaret “he’s not much of a one”. His name is John. The horse’s name is Alogo Gigi. John is going out to cut in the field. Looking at his horse, it leads whatever is being cut up.
Maybe John thinks he has something? He’s very happy. Nick knows this because he talks with him sometimes. It is morning and lovely—like today. John is going to Montreal. There isn’t enough feed for the horse. John can’t feed him enough hay.
John has a family. He’s married. He has a wife and a couple of children. John has another six horses. We can only see the backside of one! There are four more horses leading the heavy cart. Roberta doesn’t think he’s carrying anything. John has a soft seat. He’s sitting on the hay. He’s got a saddle—he needs that.
Maria thinks the moustache makes John look lovely. We don’t know if John will go home after he’s finished work. “He’ll just go home to his family,” says Helen N. My word he will! His wife will have dinner ready for him—not just carrots either. The horse will be let go in the paddock and there will be cheese sandwiches for John and grass for the horse. They’ve got a lovely home, and the horses are out in the paddocks.
