The Accordion Player*
*said in a serious voice!
This is lovely. “That’s lovely, isn’t it,” says Roberta. “There’s no pigs there,” says Frank. (Our last story was about pigs!)
He’s got nice hair, hasn’t he? It’s a poor little boy all by himself. It looks like he’s trying to collect some money—nothing wrong with him! But there is something wrong with his accordion. He needs money to fix it. His name is John, but people call him Georgie Porgie, and Goofy too! He’s very happy and he has lovely black hair.
He’s very happy sitting down with his accordion. John plays it very well. Val thinks he’s playing in front of a gaol. Poor thing, he’s been in big trouble. Poor thing!
Someone has brought him there. Maria thinks he’s lonely like her and she’d like to invite John to her home. By the looks of it, he’s been there for a while. He plays happy music, but he won’t make much money. John could be on school holiday. It’s a good idea if he stays there all day. He’ll be happy and safe—no evil eye for him!
Roberta thinks he has parents. He might have brothers or sisters, or both, and he tries to make money for them. We wonder how old John is? He could be six, or maybe he’s older than six. He might be eight or ten. Stanley says he’s eleven! John has white soles on his blue shoes. They have left a bowl so they don’t have to worry about that.
He is very handsome and very smart. He’s on his own playing the piano accordion. He’s sitting on the floor with his back to the wall of the house. He’ll gather up the money and go home. If he has a father who likes drinking, he’ll be very happy and spend it quickly!
