Summer on the Lake
October 27, 2019
By the storytellers of the Huntington
The young lady is workin' the paddles and this gentleman races up and he's not the least bit interested. He's comin' up to the side of the boat.
They're showing off.
He looks like he's asking her a question. He wonders if she's strong enough to handle the boat so she's showing him her muscles.
She's the boss - she's showing off that she's the man in the relationship. He's stunned.
They're on a lake. Winnipesaukee.
They don't know each other.
He's trying to get into the boat and she thinks he'll dump it over.
Carolyn is 18. She's working at a camp up there, a girls summer camp. She's going to college to be a phys ed teacher. She's someone who's always been doing things.
Sam is 35. He's a park ranger. He's been one for a week. Before that he didn't do much. He's recently divorced so he's going to ask her out. He's just trying to get her to come out of the front of the boat.
It's Carolyn's day off. She went out to breakfast with the other camp leaders. Then she decided to go alone to the lake to practice and swim laps.
Sam had been checking the trails to make sure everything was okay. That's part of his job. Then he made a list of suggestions for improving the park. He decided he was ready to go fishing.
They probably talked to each other on their iPads.
Carolyn doesn't look like she's wet, so she didn't go swimming yet.
Sam was doing the other part of his job to make sure that everything on the lake was okay and he paddled up to her.
Carolyn says, "Are you new around here?"
Sam says, "I'm new on the job."
Sam is less than happy. He's looking at her arms and thinking she's really strong and maybe she could even beat him up.
That's not his prerogative.
Sam says, "How would you like to come out to dinner with me?"
Carolyn says, "No, I have other plans for dinner."
He's persistent and says, "How 'bout another night? You can tell me about this park because I'm new and need to know about it."
She would agree. It can't be Saturday night because that would be a real date. She might say, "How about lunch?"
At their lunch date, there was too much of an age difference. They discovered that they didn't have much in common. They were admiring each other physically. They might discover they had more in common than they thought.
The love of the outdoors.
They won't continue to date after the summer.
Carolyn would have a lot of men to choose from when she goes back to college.
Sam was looking for a summer fling.
They parted on good terms.
