Poor Old Rabbit
Ooh Hoo! That’s an animal! It is, too. Yep, I reckon it is! It’s not a rabbit. It’s bigger than a rabbit, it’s a crook. He has his leg showing.
His name is Rabbit Wander—because he wanders in the street to show people how the place can be set up. He’s there to show people he can do anything, but he’s doing nothing!
He has a lot of family. He thinks he’s very clever and very strong. He has too much brains, like Maria! Val says he hasn’t any brains.
There must be some noise there. It’s a hot day, so he jumps in the water to get fresher—that shows he’s very smart. Yes, there are people around. He is very happy.
There are bent pieces around him. He’s sitting on a bike. It’s all bent. He’s not too happy because there’s nothing there except a bent-up bike. He is not smiling.
I’ll tell you where he’s going. He is hot there, so he jumps out to go somewhere cooler, to keep the heat out. We know very well that rabbits don’t stay out in the day—it’s too hot. At night, they go in their hole and probably make some more rabbits! Bill says: “He definitely will!”
He’s sitting in the middle. You can smell the ground. He wouldn’t stay outside the rabbit hole because a lot of people might catch him and eat him. He’s using his brain. He thinks: “How can I get away, so nobody shoots me.”
If Nick was there, he would try to find a way to help him get away. The bike’s in a hell of a mess. Helen agrees. Rabbit is holding a spade in his left hand.
Nick wishes he could be there to help the poor fellow. He would pull him by the ears off the tank and help him get away and help him be free. Val says she doesn’t think he’s a poor old rabbit! She can’t be worried about rabbits!
If the doctor was there very close, he would help the rabbit.
Maria B. made up this poem about Rabbit:
Come here, Rabbit
Rabbit, come with me,
Happy as could be!
