Peter in the Bag
Oh lovely! He’s beautiful! O, po, po, po! Oh boy, he’s inside a handbag and he’s laughing. He’s in the bag so nobody can see him, and he will pop up and say “Cock-a-doodle-doo”! Crissie supposes the bag was handy at the time.
We think it’s a boy. His name is Peter. He looks like a Peter. He’s smiling and they put him in the bag for a photo. His father put him in the bag. It’s his father’s work bag.
It’s taking place in the surgery. It’s a doctor’s bag. Maria thinks Peter is tough! He’s got no clothes on. “Dear, dear, dear, no clothes,” says Stanley.
Crissie says that’s how babies should come—in a doctor’s bag! Elsie says when she was a baby, her parents took her on holiday and they put her in a drawer to sleep!
We would hear the sound of Peter laughing. Peter is the only boy. He doesn’t have brothers or sisters. His parents went for a swim. Sometimes, Peter goes for a swim too. They live in Bondi, near the beach. Maria says: "Peter swims like a rock … like me!"
Peter is having a fun picture. Val thinks Peter has probably wet the bed, and he might be feeling upset. When the parents come home, they’ll put a special outfit on Peter—clothes made of silk—and they’ll put him to bed. Maria would love him to cuddle up with her, so she won’t feel lonely, but Elsie wouldn’t like a baby in bed with her—she wouldn’t enjoy that!
