Old Country Long Ago
Mother's Day was an opportunity to get together for a family reunion, potluck and bake sale, all on one day. The neighbors brought food to the church and it was a wonderful Mother's Day.
Clayton was crying because Solomon had an ice cream and he didn't have one. Solomon's mom Gloria wasn't worried because she knew there was lots of ice cream. Gardenia was cutting up a coconut pie after she had cut up some of the other desserts, and Rose was dishing up some rice and beans. There was lots of other food, but the desserts were where the kids went first.
Lots of people were waiting in line for their food, and the "balloon lady" was blowing up balloons and making clowns and animals. Nobody knew her name – maybe she was just visiting. She was having lots of fun entertaining people. Every now and then a balloon would pop and people would jump.
The people in line were talking, babies were crying and birds were singing. Soon forks would be scraping food on plates. It sure smelled good. When they were done, they gave the leftover food to the poor people, but with so many people, there wasn't much food left. All the desserts were gone.
When they were done with their celebration, they cleaned up the mess, put their dishes in their buggies and got ready to leave. Their smelly horses pulled the buggies home and they all took a nap. They sure did sleep good!
