MONKEY BUSINESS – 4th May, 2015
Diana Durban and Monkey Business are heading off in their plane to Africa. They are leaving Australia early in the morning about 7am. They are going on a safari taking in islands en route where they might camp out the nights.
On arrival they meet up with three rangers who will accompany them on their trek. They are carrying rifles in case they come upon any danger. They rangers are good marksmen, so Diana and Monkey Business are feeling very safe to begin their adventure. Everyone packed the minimum amount as they have to carry their own backpack.
As they head into the jungle they hear lions roaring, see monkeys jumping from tree to tree, gorillas pounding their chests, birds singing, insects buzzing and numerous other echoes. They have planned their trip in the summer months to avoid the rainy season.
They are aiming to reach the Shelley River by nightfall to camp. The following day they will follow the banks of the river. They successfully fished for dinner that night and enjoyed the nuts, fruit and berries gathered during the days walk. They peacefully fell asleep listening to the night sounds.
They hunted and gathered food each day - wild turkey, ostrich, birds, ducks, fish, berries and fruit. They followed the river which enabled them to fill water containers as needed. The rangers are very aware of what can and can't be eaten by humans.
Monkey Business is very afraid of gorillas and other large wild animals, so he sits on Diana's shoulder to feel safe.
At the end of the week they reached civilisation once again. Diana revelled in a hot bath, cup of tea and a proper bed. After a couple of luxurious days, she booked in maintenance on the plane to be done prior to their return to Australia.
With a great sense of relief and accomplishment, the pair departed early in the morning and were glad to reach home again all in one piece. What wonderful stories there were to tell.
