Holiday Delivery
The neighborhood mailman's name was Ralph. Ralph had worked the same route for over twenty years and knew all the residents he delivered to. It was a great job, he was a carrier in the small town of Winchester, where there was only one gas station, a bar, a restaurant and a church and school combination. It was a pretty area of Wisconsin, close to the City of Appleton, but far enough away that you had the cozy small town feeling.
It was the holiday's and Ralph was busier than ever, with Christmas cards and gifts to deliver. Ralph loved this time of the year, everyone was so happy and busy preparing for the season. His days were long, but that didn't matter to Ralph, he was delivering so much joy.
Ralph went up to Mrs. Podvin's house. He knew she was sad this year, it was the first Christmas following the death of her husband. He hoped that the Christmas cards he was bringing, would lessen her hurt and bring her smile back to her. Ralph rang the door bell,he didn't want to leave these cards in her mailbox, he wanted to give them to her personally. When Mrs. Podvin came to the door, Ralph smelled the aroma of fresh baked cookies. Mrs. Podvin invited Ralph in for coffee and a cookie, and to warm up. Ralph stayed about ten minutes and visited with Mrs. Podvin, who stated she was making Christmas cookies in hopes visitors dropped in over the holidays. Ralph thought to himself, "I hope people come, she has no other family".
That night Ralph went home and told his wife Lynn about Mrs. Podvin and his fears that no one would come for the holidays to visit her. Lynn and Ralph decided that this coming weekend when they had their four small grandchildren, they would bring them over to Mrs. Podvin's for a visit. That would surely brighten her day. And that they did. Mrs. Podvin was surprised and delighted when she opened the door and saw the six visitors. She ushered them inside of the home, and hosted them for hours. They ate, played games and laughed, spending the entire afternoon together. When the day came to a close, Mrs. Podvin thanked them for coming. As Lynn and Ralph drove home with their grandchildren, they looked at each other and Ralph said, this will be one of my fondest Christmas memories.
