Hide and Seek: Two Children Behind the Lounge
He’s hiding himself behind the lounge. Who is he? He looks like a Peter! Agatha is with Peter.
Why are they behind the lounge? Because they have no clothes! Agatha is wearing a bow in her hair. They’ve been swimming, but it’s dark outside. It must be nighttime.
Agatha and Peter know each other because they’re undressed! They look like brother and sister. From the looks on their faces, they are wary about who is coming!
Crissie says that her mother used to make a bow out of silk and put it in her hair every day. She sewed for her and she matched the ribbons to the clothes. The ribbons were always wide ones—very fashionable at that time.
It’s taking place a long time ago. Val thinks it might be wrong. Peter and Agatha’s mother might be coming into the room. They ducked off to have a dip. They’re saying “Mummy”, and they should have been in bed!
They’re not going to sit on the lounge because it’s too nice. The lounge is made of silky damask—it is pale green. That would be beautiful!
When Peter and Agatha’s mother comes in, Val thinks they will probably get their bottoms smacked! Margaret says she would come and see them otherwise.
Peter and Agatha would get dressed and go off to bed. There could be a gramophone in the room. In those days, there were gramophones but children didn’t know how to play them. Peter and Agatha were just having a hide-and-seek game. Maria thinks they were cooling down after walking on hot grass. Crissie thinks they were just playing hide-and-seek from Mum. Maria says: “they could catch cold!”
Peter and Agatha are dressed in silk pyjamas and sent off to bed!
