Happy Ever After
Oh, how gorgeous! The high buttons. It’s Newport Beach before the 1st World War. It’s summertime. They feel hot. That’s the way they are dressed in those times. “I did too” said Kathleen!
It’s Matilda and Henrietta! They met in school and they’re cousins.
They do dressmaking and sewing for a living. They like what they do, they’re smiling! They feel happy and hot and they are enjoying their outing. They are very relaxed.
They have buttons which are there for a reason, to stop someone from trying to rob them.
We hear the surf, waves, the odd car going past, we hear seagulls and young children playing.
Matilda is holding a book in her lap. She’s reading a book about Life Savers!
They’re underneath the shade because it’s very, extremely, HOT.
We smell brine and seaweed. We smell crabs and the salt air. That’s right.
The girls dream about a better life. Not having to work. They look as though they’re about to be on a vaudeville show. Oh, doing the can can. Oh, yes I could do the can can!
(The Can Can Song).
They’re looking into the future, a married life. Hopefully they’ll have children. They make friends with a couple of the life savers!
Then they get married and live happily ever after. That’s the end of the story.
