FOX AND FRIENDS
Little Jane has climbed up into the big tree that her brothers, Josh and Isaac always climb (and tell her she can't because she is a girl). It is a sunny, warm day in September. The whole family raked all the leaves up yesterday at mom's command. Dad is supposed to be keeping an eye on Jane while mom is busy inside, instead dad is chatting with a neighbor and e brothers. Now is Jane's chance to show her brothers that she is as brave as they are. The pile of leaves looks soft, but so far away! Jane screws up her courage (and her face) and bullfrog jumps from the tree, yelling "BONSAI!" like Josh and Isaac do when they do anything daring.
SWOOSH! Jane is sitting in the colorful autumn leaves. What an exciting adventure for the little sister. Dad, Josh and Isaac come running over, amazed as Jane hears mom call out, "I'm not taking her to the hospital!"
"You know there are all sorts of things in that pile of leaves," Josh says, trying to scare his sister.
"Yeah, bugs and SNAKES, and SKUNKS!" Isaac chimes in.
"There might even be foxes!" Josh says, knowing that foxes scare Jane. There is a rustling in the leaves, "It's a fox!" Josh announces. Jane is not afraid, she just jumped out of a huge tree.
A little squirrel pops out of the leaf pile, he had been looking for nuts when Jane's leap surprised him.
"Let's catch it!" her brother call out.
Jane gently puts her hands around the shivering, tiny creature. ""He's my friend, he was showing me where to land," Jane tells her brothers (who are now jealous of Jane) He wants to be our pet, can I keep him dad?"
Dad tells Josh to go get a small cage from the garage and the squirrel is placed inside with some leaves from the pile as a bed. Isaac (who is also jealous of Jane's bravery and squirrel capture just says, "That is a stinky squirrel,"
Jane says to her brother, "That's a great name for OUR new pet, thanks Isaac!" She then includes Josh by asking him, "What do squirrels eat, Josh? You're smart about animals," Josh wants to be a veterinarian when he grows up.
Now all of the children are discussing the new pet squirrel and the adventures they will have. (After the leaves are raked back into a pile!)
