Escape: A Day at the Beach
It’s a female. Veronica Lake. It’s a long time ago. This is on a beach, in a foreign country. It looks like Italy or Spain or the Greek Islands, by the costumes, or it’s a backyard beach in our own country. This is the turn of the century, in summer, for sure. Her name is Anna. She is happy she’s having her photo taken in national dress. She’s saluting the sun. She’s happy to be there. Ahh, just relaxed.
She comes from the Eastern Block or Portugal, or from Asia. She’s a happy lady. She’s confident and she likes sport. She likes national dancing. She’s got the skirt and is a wee bit heavy around the hips. Perhaps they’re petticoats. She feels good to be alive. She’s dreaming of “Oh My Darling Love of Thee”. She’s thinking of someone special, by the smile on her face. She looks representative of a happy family, a happy family background. She has a strict father, in those days. Today the kids get away with everything. She might be reminiscing. She looks like a product of her era. Her family is there.
She is a housewife with children. She has 2 or 3 children. We hear laughter, waves, the sound of happiness, the children screaming and laughing and someone saying “smile”.
Anna wants to go for a swim, paddle her feet, play with her young family. We smell sea water, a fishy smell. There’s lots of sand and a fresh water tank out the back. The children are in the background. It’s home time.
The day’s over, the fun’s over. It’s time to go. They all hold hands and have a dance. They may have a real Christian blessing at the end of the dances.
She’s back to the real world. What a letdown. She wants to enjoy it for as long as she can. She says “let’s do this again”.
