Danny is on his way to getting well
Danny was sleeping and he woke up with a start! He is propped up on three pillows. There is a bag with medicine in it. It looks like he is sick. There is a lamp by his bed which is turned on. He had been reading a story and the book is laying on the bed. There is a glass of water on his nightstand so that he can take his medicine. The stachel at the end of his bed might be a doctor's bag, and there is an extra blanket at the end of his bed to keep him from getting cold.
There is a picture of a dog on his wall. Danny drew the picture in school. He brought the picture home and hung it up to make it look nice. He has a nice comforter on his bed, too. He's in bed because the doctor told him he needed to stay there.
The doctor, Dr. Meyer, is out talking to Danny's mother. Her name is Julie. They are talking about what Danny will have to do to get better. He is telling her what he has, and what to do to speed up his recovery. Danny has the chicken pox, and he he really wants to scratch them.
Dr. Meyer is explaining to Julie that Danny must not scratch, and that no one can come in and visit. Even Danny's brothers and sisters can't come into the room. He is also telling her about a paste that she can put on the pox to make them stop itching. It really smells. that's why they put the sign on the door "do not enter.
Danny has five brothers and sisters. Two brothers and three sisters. His mom doesn't want the rest of the kids to catch the chicken pox. She knows she will have to wash her hands well. She will also have to wash all the bedding. She will have to clean everything Danny might have touched.
Danny's mom is thinking she might have to hire a nurse to take care of him. She needs to take care of the rest of the kids and her husband. Julie asks Dr. Meyer about hiring a nurse. He thinks it is a very good idea. He won't have to come in as often, and she won't have as much to do. He gave her the names of a couple nurses to call. The nurse would talk to the doctor and find out what medicine Danny should take and when.
Danny is tired of being in bed. He just wants to get out and play. Julie is looking for a nurse who will play games and read with Danny so that he isn't so bored. They can play tic tac toe, checkers, monopoly, cards, and other games. They would probably listen to the radio, too.
But Danny really wants to play outside, so he will have to get well. That means he can't scratch, drink lots of liquids, and he will have to rest, and he can call for help with a little bell. The first game he wants to play when he is well is baseball. He could get hurt, but thats OK. There are other people who will take care of him, and that is not as bad as being sick!
