Dancing in the Rain in the Puddle
The Arc: March 22, 2012
How many people are in this picture? There are 5 people (Brandon). I see 11 people (Josette). No, there are 15 people (Shelly & Sam). I think there are 8 people (Heather). So, we can agree that there are several people in this picture, right? [All agree.] What do you think they are doing? They are being silly (Heather). They’re getting wet because it is raining (Josette). They are playing in the rain (Ryan). They are dancing (Mary & Quinn)! [Josette, Heather, and Andrew then “act silly in the rain; pretend to get wet from the rain; play in the rain; and dance in the rain.]The guy in the back might have a gun (Andrew). A gun that turns into a shovel, right? (joan) [Andrew then pretends to hold a gun that turns into a shovel.] In the background it is storming (Shelly). What do we hear when it is storming? “I come up with good names, don’t I. Do I get a bonus?,” (Sam asks). [joan walks over to Sam and stands in front of him and applauds him. Everyone laughs.] So, what do we hear when it is storming? Thunder sounds like “boom” (Brandon). It sounds like “bam” (Heather). [One-half of the room uses “boom” and the other half “bam” to make thunder noises so that it goes, “boom, bam, boom, bam, etc.” What do you want to say lighting sounds like? It sounds like “k-chershhh” (Mariah). [Every one then makes the “k-chershh” sound and moves their arms like lightening straight up and down and in a jagged pattern. Then we combined the thunder—boom, bam & lightening—and had quite a storm!]
What do you think these people are feeling? They feel cooled off (Josette), happy (Mary), and refreshed (Heather). How did they get here? They just got off the bus (Ryan), and they are friends (Quinn). Where were they before they got on the bus? They were at home (Andrew). They were riding the bus home (Brandon). They got on the bus because they wanted to go to the store (Jessica). They got on the bus because they were coming from a store (Quinn), or church (Josette), or school (Jennifer).
What do you want to say about the people in this picture? Someone has his feet crossed (Shelly). [Everyone then crosses and uncrosses their feet) It looks like someone is doing ballet (Josette). [Everyone then does ballet arms.] It looks like they have not seen rain for a while (Ryan).
What names do you want to give the people in this picture? The ballet dancer is named “Shelly” (Shelly). The crossed legs person is named Edith (Brandon). The girl in the middle of the picture is named “Brandon” (Michelle). The guy with the beard is named “John” (Andrew). And the girl in the middle is named “Sabrina” (Quinn).
