Case of the missing cookies
There is a little boy named Henry who is getting into mischief. He is getting into the cookie jar. His dog is peeking through the doorway behind him trying to figure out how he can get in, too. The dog, a golden retriever named Rover, is just as mischievious as his owner.
The cookie jar was on the top shelf in the kitchen, but Henry really likes cookies. He got a chair and climbed onto the counter. His mom was outside hanging the laundry, so she didn't see the trouble he was getting into.
Henry heard the dog come through the door, and he knows Rover is watching him. He is listening to hear if his mom is coming in with the dog. He's hoping his dad is out raking leaves and mom went back downstairs to finish laundy. But he is still in trouble.
He doesn't know for sure where mom is. He doesn't know if she is upstairs doing something, or she might be headed toward the kitchen. He will have to try to hide so his mom doesn't see what he has been doing. He will have to distract his mom with the cooking so that he can put away the cookie jar.
Henry's dad, Elmer, was out raking leaves, so he did not see the trouble Henry was getting into either. He was upset that Henry wasn't helping. He will probably be even more upset when he finds out that Henry ate the cookies, because he likes them too.
His mom will be upset with him because she was baking the cookies and other treats for a get together with her friends.
Henry plans on telling his mother that the dog ate all the cookies but he is covered with cookie dough from head to toe. She will notice, and he will be in trouble.
