“Alone at Last or The Girl in the Park or Backyard”
Story by participants in the "Seniors on Stage" at Cornell Hall. Session facilitated by Lillian Ribeiro.
The pretty lady, Lolita, is practicing her music on the guitar. She’s on a bench. Who ever is around is listening to her. She is relaxing by playing her guitar. It looks like a pleasant fall day. There are leaves on the ground. It’s a perfect place to practice her music. She is playing blue grass. She looks lovely because of the way she is sitting and playing the guitar. She’s got something on her mind and she is playing music to feel better. She’s composing music to someone special.
She is in the park playing pretty music, nice music. She could be in Central Park. Or on a farm. She’s in her own backyard with no one to bother her. She plays as long as she wants. When her mother calls her for supper, she stops what she's doing, and goes in.
She hopes for something to lift her spirit so she can be happy. She hopes for someone who cares for her and she cares for. She hopes for a letter from her boyfriend whose in the service. He wants to marry her or get engaged. She hopes for children. She hopes to be a famous person. She hopes for a talent agent who can push her along. She hopes for a successful living. Contracts, promotions, and support, with a talent agent.
She’s single and looking for a man. Someone to have dinner with. The man she was with didn’t do anything to make her happy. So she said, “I’ll talk with you later.” And that was it. She couldn’t get him to treat her the way she wanted to. He was a cold fish. And she’s a hot dish. A hot tamale. She’s going to look for somebody different somebody who doesn’t want her just for her face. Somebody who cares about her. Somebody who will clean up the leaves! Lolita tells Opal, “Let him go!”
"Christmas is coming the geese are getting fat. Please put a penny in the old man’s hat. Please put a penny in the old man’s hat." It’s a nice cool evening she plays a soothing song and drinks a hot tea. She’s whistling and playing the guitar. "Can ta da da done bar done.” She’s singing the song and people stop and listen to her. “Hey Mr. Tally man tally me banana. I wan' go home.”
The End.
