“A Day at the Beach”
High Fi is the 2 ½ year old son of David. They are playing on the beach in Atlantic City. It is a summer day and we know this because “the sand is the color it is supposed to be.” It must be warm because none of their clothes have sleeves, they aren’t wearing leggings, and David is in the water, along with the other people. It smells like fish and we can hear the ocean and see and hear the sounds of the pier. It is a warm day, with calm waves, and low tide. Judging by what we know, it is probably late afternoon, maybe dinner time. Everyone is having fun.
High Fi and David are visiting from Africa. They will be staying with young grandfather, “Grump”, in Atlantic City for six weeks. While they are in town they are going to see the sights. They will go to the beach, see the ocean, sand, and ice-capades on the boardwalk. Maybe they will go on the big sliding board on the boardwalk. But today…today, they are on the beach.
David is throwing High Fi in the air. He must be at least 9 feet off of the ground! High Fi isn’t sure if he is having fun yet and has a look on his face that says “you better catch me.” And he better. If he doesn’t High Fi will cry…and get wet! David isn’t sure if High Fi is having fun yet either, but he looks like he is quite used to throwing children in the air. High Fi must have siblings! There are people surrounding them and a passerby is taking their picture. High Fi’s mother is in the ocean, jumping the waves.
There is so much to do on the beach. They can go canoeing, or surfing, play cards, or play ball – like volleyball and hitting the beach ball.
They could BBQ or go on a boat, but maybe only the lifeguard is allowed to have a boat.
They packed a lot for their day at the beach. They have a little bucket and shovel, umbrella, blanket, and radio. It better not rain because then they will need to carry it back! They see the lifeguards, who are wearing sleeveless shirts and always blowing their whistles. They are watching the sailboats go by and see the airplanes overhead with advertisements. There are shells and if David and High Fi go under the boardwalk, they might find more.
When they are hungry, they will go to Wawa and get hoagies and soda. When they are finished at the beach, they will go to Grump’s house for dinner. But for now, they will have fun on the beach. They must remember their sunscreen since sunburn makes you red (and when you push down on it, it disappears!). They are having a fun day – they might even be on the news!
