1945 Family Celebration
Bill has just come back from the war and is greeting his wife Janet and his children Mary Elizabeth, and Billy Sylvester. They’ve made a contraption for Christmas to celebrate that looks like a whole bunch of gnomes up top of a telephone pole. They are, however, candle lights made to look like people to honour those fallen. The war has just ended, and Bill has just got home in time for Christmas and Hanukkah. The set-up is deliberately like that of a Minnoa to also honour the Jewish tradition.
Bill is a very reliable man. There’s always work to do and when there is, he’s always there. There is work to do today as Bill is trying to get these lights plugged in. The family is very interested in the work that their father is doing, especially because, not only is it Christmastime, but it’s also one of his children’s birthday’s. He and the family are currently station in St John’s bilingual base. The building is believed to be an old schoolhouse converted into an army base.
Not long ago, Bill was stationed in England and made the trip through Normandy and Dieppe. The Canadian sacrificed a lot in those times. The children were left behind with their grandparents at this time. After the war everyone hoped that maybe this will give them a chance of a new way of thinking – everyone was happy they were going home.
After the family meets up to put the lights on, they all go inside for a nice cup of tea with some cake. This is just a snack before they have a real nice supper. They are so happy to be together yet again, as they have been away from each other so very long.
